A New Era Has Begun: Reactions from the Columbus Crew Sale

Home/U.S. Soccer Leagues/MLS/Columbus Crew SC/A New Era Has Begun: Reactions from the Columbus Crew Sale

Today’s announcement from the Columbus Crew was touted as one of the most important in club history.  That turned out to be the case as a new owner, only the second in the Crew’s existence, was announced.  We turned to two former Crew players and one USMNT legend for their thoughts on the sale.

Jason Garey, a forward with the Crew from 2006-2010, was quick to share positive thoughts about the Hunt family and the legacy they left in Columbus.

“Clark and Dan Hunt are great people, who carried on their dad’s legacy. They put so much into soccer, creating a first-class organization.  I really appreciate what they did.”

But he was quite bullish on a future with new owners.

“I’m interested to see what direction they take. The team needed a spark, a change.  It’s an exciting time. Fans should be excited. The players should be excited.”

Like Garey, Gino Padula was a member of the 2008 MLS Cup Championship squad.  The defender wore the Black & Gold of the Crew from 2008-2010.

“I love the Crew.  I had a good time while I was there.  I would like to say thank you to the Hunts.  They were a very good family who always supported the team.”

Padula was also optimistic about the Crew’s future.

“Change happens. I hope this change will be for the better. I hope the owner will bring some new ideas. I wish them all the best.”

Padula even left the door open to returning to the Crew.

“I would love to come back to the Crew someday.  I would love to help the team.  My dream is to coach there someday.”

Legendary USMNT goalkeeper Tony Meola, who starred for the Kansas City Wizards from 1999-2004, also gave his thoughts as a player that worked for a team owned by the Hunt family.  The former USMNT keeper was in Kansas City working as a brand ambassador for Allstate at the MLS All-Star Game.

“Thank you to the Hunt family for their involvement and dedication to the sport.  Without them, there wouldn’t be an MLS in this country.”

Meola recalled happy memories with the late Lamar Hunt Sr. He took away numerous life lessons from the late sporting pioneer and was always impressed with Hunt’s dedication to the fans.

“The new ownership is very strong and committed. Excited to hear that they will still run the team in the vision of Lamar Hunt, which is paramount to the fans.’
