Crew Hot Heading into Playoffs

Home/U.S. Soccer Leagues/MLS/Columbus Crew SC/Crew Hot Heading into Playoffs

The Columbus Crew (13-10-10, 49 points) scored three goals on the road for the second consecutive week, beating the New York Red Bulls (12-10-11, 47 points) by a final score of 3-1 at Red Bull Arena on Sunday, October 19.

Aaron Schoenfeld notched the game’s opening goal in the 17th minute after settling a cross by Ethan Finlay and firing past Luis Robles. In the 34th minute, Finlay doubled the lead after taking a seeing-eye through ball from Tony Tchani and cleanly finishing. Lloyd Sam halved the Crew’s lead in the 58th minute, but a Schoenfeld insurance tally in the 80th minute preserved the full three points for the Black & Gold.

The victory for the Crew was just its second win at New York since 2004. Finlay increased his stellar season totals to 11 goals and 7 assists by scoring one goal and setting up two others. Tony Tchani added to his career-high single-season assist total with his sixth assist and now has four helpers over his last three matches.

The Crew maintains the chance of capturing the third or fourth seed in the Eastern Conference, depending on its result next weekend in the regular-season finale versus Philadelphia (4:00 p.m. ET, Time Warner Cable SportsChannel) and the outcome of next Sunday’s New York-Sporting Kansas City match.
