FIFA 23 Review

There is a lot to like about FIFA 23, the latest offering from EA Sports.

It’s the last FIFA branded game in the famed series as the move to EA Sports FC (thanks to the loss of the FIFA license) takes place next year.  FIFA 23 feels fresh and exciting, raising hopes for future offerings.  We have heard some complaints regarding Ultimate Team microtransactions and the Switch version of the game, but the Xbox Series X game we reviewed was pure footballing magic.

First and foremost, this year’s edition is quite possibly the most realistic soccer game ever made.  HyperMotion2 technology brings an unheard of amount of realism to a video game, creating a smooth, fluid, and fast gameplay experience.  It looks, feels, and plays like real soccer.

Second, AFC Richmond and the cast of Ted Lasso make an appearance in the game.  Yes, you can play as Jamie Tartt, Roy Kent, and Dani Rojas, and they are really good.  It’s innovative and shows that EA Sports is willing to try “outside the box” ideas that genuinely make people happy.  Seeing America’s favorite manager stroll the sidelines is a sight to see and something that will make any gamer smile.

Third, Volta reminds us of the FIFA Street days, bringing about nostalgia for street football and small-sided games taking place in cool locales like warehouses.

Fourth, FIFA 23 literally has no competition as the Pro Evolution Soccer/eFootball series has struggled in recent years.  Steam reviews are “mostly negative,” and Metacritic scores are equally abysmal with a 34 Metascore and a 1.2 user score.  FIFA has always had an advantage in the licensing department, and this is no different this year.  Players have access to over 30 leagues, 100 stadiums, 700 teams, and 19,000 players.

Thankfully women’s soccer has an even bigger presence in FIFA 23.  Barclays FA Women’s Super League and Division 1 Arkema are included in the game.  FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia and New Zealand 2023™ (along with FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™) will also be available as a post-launch update at no additional cost.

Arron Dellosa, CEO of Virtual Pro Gaming, Inc. and a prominent expert on esports, was willing to share his thoughts on the improvements he observed in Pro Clubs.

“More customization options for players and teams,” Dellosa said. “Player builds are more balanced between height and weight.  Drop-in matches bring a more sociable experience for new players.  You can jump in and out of matches fast.”

Overall FIFA 23 is an excellent option for casual and hardcore soccer fans looking to play the beautiful game on their favorite platform.
