Men’s Soccer: Mount Union Ties Geneva in Second Consecutive Double-Overtime Game

Home/College Soccer/University of Mount Union Men's Soccer/Men’s Soccer: Mount Union Ties Geneva in Second Consecutive Double-Overtime Game

The Mount Union men’s soccer team tied Geneva 1-1 on Tuesday evening after its second consecutive game of playing through double overtime.

The Purple Raiders (1-2-2) attempted to get on the board in the first half with shots from freshman Jon Schroeder (Parma/Normandy) and juniors Aaron Liezert (Medina/Medina) and Scott Welker (Solon/Solon). The only point scored in the half was by Geneva’s (2-2-1) Gib McCracken in the 34th minute of the game, which came after a free kick by Jake Broadwick. The teams went into halftime with the Raiders trailing by one.

In the second half, both Geneva’s Abel Carleton and Mount Union senior Kevin Blackley (Aurora/Aurora) received yellow cards in the 63rd and 71st minutes, respectively. Three minutes after Carleton’s card, Mount Union’s Welker found the back of the Geneva goal off of a rebounded save from goalkeeper Luke Nolan, tying the game at one and recording his second goal of the season.
The score remained tied at one throughout the remainder of regulation, sending the game into overtime.

After two overtime periods and neither team scoring a goal, the game resulted in a final score of 1-1.

The Purple Raiders next play at Oberlin on Saturday, Sept. 17 at 7 p.m.
