FC Arizona’s Cesar Mexia is the winner of the 2019 NPSL Golden Boot as the league’s top goal scorer. The Obregón, Sonora, Mexico native is in his third season with the Southwest Conference side. It has marked a steady improvement of his nine-goal tally in 2017 and his 11- goal tally in 2018.
“I’m very proud and excited about winning [the Golden Boot],” said Mexia.
He went on about how the award has affected his game.
“I think that winning an award shouldn’t change how you go about your business… My personal motivation is what pushes me to accomplish my goals I have for myself and for the team in the playoffs.”
“Cesar is a great player and has gotten better every year,” said FC Arizona Owner and GM Scott Taylor. “He finds space in the box like no other. Even when teams queue in on him, they have a hard time with him. He is a great talent that just knows how to score goals. To have someone like that for the club for three years is just great.”
Mexia becomes the second player on FC Arizona to claim the honor after Omar Nuno won the award with his former club, Sonoma County Sol, before joining FC Arizona.
“Omar has helped Cesar a tremendous amount along with the rest of the team,” said Taylor. “He is a big, physical forward. He’s someone you have to double team. Not to take away from Cesar’s success. Those two just work very well together.”
Mexia’s personal favorite of the season was the second goal against City of Angels FC.
“I got the ball close to the line, made a diagonal run, and fired a shot outside the box,” Mexia said. “That goal really got me going.”
FC Arizona will look to continue their run in the 2019 NPSL Playoffs in the West Region Final when they host ASC San Diego on July 20th at 7:30 pm PT.
“It’s going to be a very exciting match,” Mexia said. “They are a good team and we are too.”
“I saw [San Diego] play in 2016 before I made this team,” said Taylor on San Diego. “I’ve always admired their product. They are a friendly rival of ours and our history goes way back. It’s going to be a big-time battle.”
And FC Arizona should be ready for such a battle thanks to a powerful pairing of Golden Boot winners in Mexia and Nuno.
