From early memories of scoring four goals as a six-year-old to becoming a leading scorer for three consecutive years on his middle school team, Skye Shogren is imprinting his mark as one of the best young players in the country. Skye chose to play at Griswold High School with a group of close friends that he was accustomed to playing with. He was able to make an immediate impact as he started varsity as a freshman at the forward position, and was able to stand out as a leading striker. From dominating as a middle schooler and making his high school team a state title contender, Skye Shogren is readying for his senior year of high school soccer. Before Skye’s senior season the young forward/midfielder is next braced with new found competition he has never faced before thanks to being selected to participate in the Shale Soccer Classic presented by Admiral Sports.
Skye has been awarded honors that include being recognized as 1st team All-Conference and 1st team All-State. Skye notes that individual honors are awesome, but what has truly been the highlight of his young and successful career thus far have been moments created as a team, not as an individual.
“This year was probably the craziest and most emotional year because it was the last chance I was going get to play with all the guys I went to Griswold with, and got to play with ever since I was little. So our main goal was to win state, which we didn’t end up doing. We lost in the quarterfinals unfortunately, but we did end up winning our conference, which was huge considering we went from being second to last my sophomore year and this year we were able to pull it off in our conference championship. It’s been a crazy ride with a bunch of great moments for me.”
Shogren learned a lot of his skills from simply watching soccer on the television. One of Skye’s strengths is having the ability to watch someone and how they play, teach himself an individual move or skill, then implement it in his own game. Skye prefers to watch Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo and he mimics most of his style of play from Ronaldo. Learning from others that are extremely skilled at what you want to do is not something Skye has always done he actually learned this from a teacher he tells us.
“I have this one teacher who tells me the good ones borrow, and the great ones steal.”
Skye is simply trying to keep things in perspective and take life step-by-step, he has played for Southeast Premier Club for the past four years and hopes to play Division I and maybe professional. Yet Skye understands the difficulties of making professional and is readying himself for a career in or out of the sport he loves. Before Skye being to take on future endeavors, he will be taking on the competition at the Shale Soccer Classic in mid-July, Skye spoke in being selected and what it meant to him.
“It really means a lot to me, this is a once in a lifetime opportunity for me right here. I’m committed to this, this is something I really want to do, and it’s really been an honor.”
Before Skye enters his senior season he take up an opportunity of a lifetime and will be showcasing his skills and talent for all to see.
