A New Era for Akron Men’s Soccer

After a dominating 1-0 defeat of Michigan on Tuesday night, attention quickly turned to an even bigger announcement at the University of Akron the next day. Jared Embick was given the reins of the Akron men’s soccer program on December 15, thanks to the departure of Caleb Porter to MLS.  Embick was rumored to be the favorite for the job since Porter decided he was leaving for the pros.  He would be given a three-year contract, a real commitment to

ISN Stars of Coaching Presented by Korrio – September 2012

The coaching world needs a lot more people like Florida Gulf Coast University assistant coach Danny Cepero. He is a former MLS and USL player that has taken his game and a new career in coaching to the collegiate level. Florida Gulf Coast is an emerging program with loads of potential on the national scene.  Cepero couldn’t pass up an opportunity to serve as the team’s goalkeeping coach under the expert tutelage of Head Coach Bob Butehorn. The Baldwin, NY native

Replacing A Legend: Who Should Follow Porter at UA?

Saying Caleb Porter is going to be difficult to replace is a bit of a simplistic statement.  Porter, one of the top coaches in collegiate soccer history, has made The University of Akron a soccer school in the middle of American football country. Hiring someone to take over for Porter is a historic move for Akron AD Tom Wistrcill, who must carefully weigh all the options on the table.  The options are many and the university appears to be investigating

Akron’s Porter on the Move

It should come as no surprise that Caleb Porter was named the next head coach of the Portland Timbers.  A report by the league’s own Simon Borg in early July named Porter as one of the top 5 candidates to replace the fired John Spencer.  When asked about this report, University of Akron officials dismissed the report as nothing more than a rumor. Officials were asked again about the Timbers’ interest on Akron’s media day in early August and

University of Akron Men’s Soccer Preview

The number 15 is important to the Akron men’s soccer program.  It is the number of former Zips now plying their trade in MLS (including Anthony Ampaipatakwong, who recently transferred to a Premier League club in Thailand).  It is also the number of returning players for the 2012 season.  This gives the Zips experience at every position, providing leadership and a good foundation to build from. Darren Mattocks and Luke Holmes leave the biggest holes to fill as both players turned pro after

A Season in the Minors: Life in the NPSL (Part II)

Lindsey Wilson College midfielder Tom Moody is enjoying his summer in the NPSL.  Starring for Huntsville’s Rocket City United, Moody has made an impact early and often for the South-Southeast Conference-West side. “I jumped at the chance to play for Rocket City in the summer,” Moody said. “It was a chance to see the standard or level of soccer in America.” The England native had a lot of praise for Rocket City United head coach Gerry Cleary. “He makes you want to

I am sad to leave but I know in
