MU Women’s Soccer Remain Undefeated in OAC

Carolyn Balzano’s solo goal led the Purple Raiders to a 1-0 victory in an Ohio Athletic Conference match-up against Wilmington on Saturday night. The Raiders improve to 10-2-1 and 3-0-0 overall in the OAC, while the Quakers fall to 8-4-1 and 2-1-0 in OAC action. Mount Union’s women’s soccer team defeated Ohio Northern 3-1 to open Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) play Saturday afternoon at Mount Union Stadium. Mount Union’s women’s soccer team scored a 2-0 shutout at Waynesburg in the final non-conference game of the season Saturday in Waynesburg, Pa. Mount Union is 7-2-1 after the win while Waynesburg falls to 3-4 on the season. Shannon Evans started the scoring with a goal in the 13th minute as the Purple Raiders would lead 1-0 at the break. Sophomore Shannon Evans scored her fifth goal of the season in Mount Union’s 1-0 victory over Geneva College Saturday in Beaver Falls, PA. Evans’ goal came during the early 12th minute of play and would hold through the remainder of play action. Sophomore Kelsey Malenic’s  first goal of the season led Mount Union to a 1-0 victory over Allegheny (PA) College Saturday at Mount Union Stadium. Malenic’s goal broke a scoreless tie in the 36th minute of play and held through the remainder of the game. Mount Union’s women’s soccer team was handed their first loss as they fell 2-1 at Penn State-Behrend Tuesday night. Sam Pace put the Lions up 1-0 in the 48th minute off a breakaway, low shot and beat goalkeeper Maria Favorite in the net. The Mount Union women’s soccer team ended Saturday evening’s game against tournament host Fredonia State (N.Y.) in a draw. The Purple Raiders and the Blue Devils are now 1-1-1 all-time in series play against each other. The Purple Raiders move to 2-0 on the season and it marks back-to-back shutouts for the first time since 2011, when the Raiders defeated Oberlin 1-0 (Sept. 13, 2011) and Pitt-Greensburg 8-0 (Sept. 21, 2011). Two Purple Raiders chipped in goals as the Mount Union women’s soccer team defeated Oberlin 3-0 on Friday afternoon at Bethany (W.Va.) College’s opening weekend tournament.
