The Mount Union women’s soccer team lost to Franklin (Ind.) 4-3 in double overtime Saturday night.

The Purple Raiders (2-4) tallied the first point of the game when freshman Abbie Andrews (Broadview Heights/Brecksville-Broadview Hts.) found the back of Franklin’s net in the 37th minute of the game. Sophomore Nicole Lanese (Macedonia/Nordonia) recorded the assist.

The score remained 1-0 throughout the remainder of the half, sending the Raiders into halftime with the lead.

Franklin (5-2) tied the game in the 63rd minute with a goal by Maddie Fleet. The Raiders responded in the 70th minute of the game when sophomore Mallory Wahl (Millersburg/West Holmes) scored a goal, putting the Raiders ahead by a score of 2-1.

The Raiders’ lead didn’t last long; Franklin scored goals in the 74th and 76th minutes, taking the lead with a score of 3-2.

Seven minutes after Franklin took the lead, Mount Union’s Wahl tallied her second point of the evening, tying the game at three with less than eight minutes left in the second half.

Regulation time ended with a score of 3-3, which sent the teams into overtime.

Neither team scored a point in the first ten minutes of overtime play. Less than one minute into the second overtime period, Franklin’s Clare Lenart managed to find the back of the Raiders’ net, making the final score 4-3 in Franklin’s favor.

The Raiders recorded 13 shots on the evening, with sophomore goalkeeper Claudia Boryka (Brecksville-Brecksville Broadview) recording 11 saves.

Mount Union plays again on Tuesday, Sept. 20 against Defiance at 4:30 p.m. in Defiance, Ohio.
