WPSL Elite New York Fury Dominate Over Philadelphia Fever

Home/U.S. Soccer Leagues/WPSL/WPSL Elite New York Fury Dominate Over Philadelphia Fever

The New York Fury dominated the field, defeating the Philadelphia Fever 3-0 at Hofstra University Thursday night.

Kim Yokers scored two second-half goals, and Massapequa native Gina DiMartino added a third as the Fury ran their record to 3-1.

“I thought tonight was an improvement on last week,” said Fury coach Paul Riley, referring to the team’s 2-1 loss to the Boston Breakers in their home opener.

“We were more positive, energetic and brighter with the ball. They parked the proverbial bus in front of their goal and made it difficult for us, but we did a good job spreading them out and working the wider areas.

After a scoreless first half, Yokers gave the Fury the lead in the 56th minute, getting a wide open chance on net.

In the 70th minute, she put in a deflection from inside the penalty area, and DiMartino closed out the scoring in the 80th minute. Brooklyn, NY native Michelle Betos was in goal for the Fury, and did not need to make a single save to post her second shutout of the season.

Sinead Farrelly was the best player on the park tonight, but Kim Yokers, Leigh Ann Robinson both put in tremendous shifts,” said Riley.

Philadelphia goalkeeper Michelle Dalton made five saves as the Fever fell to 0-2-1. The Fever has a quick turnaround, with only a few days before they host the Western New York Flash on Sunday at 7pm at Hofstra.

We needed this game before the battle against Western New York, and we certainly improved in a lot of departments tonight,” Riley said.
