Epic Comeback Keeps Crew in Playoff Hunt

Home/U.S. Soccer Leagues/MLS/Columbus Crew SC/Epic Comeback Keeps Crew in Playoff Hunt

The Columbus Crew (12-10-10, 46 points) overcame a two-goal deficit and scored a trio of tallies in a four-minute span late in the match to beat the Philadelphia Union (9-11-12, 39 points) by a final score of 3-2 at PPL Park on Saturday, October 11.

The Union jumped out to a 2-0 second half lead behind goals from Danny Cruz and Andrew Wenger before the Crew set two monumental club records all at once in order to secure all three points. Ethan Finlay pulled one back for the Black & Gold in the 78th minute before Justin Meram leveled it just one minute later. Finally, after a centering pass from Tony Tchani, Jairo Arrieta’s finish over Zac MacMath in the 82nd minute gave the Crew the lead and set the record for the fastest three goals in club history.

The match finished at that 3-2 scoreline, completing the comeback for the Black & Gold and also cementing the first regular-season occurrence in club history where the Crew won after being down by two goals on the road. The victory takes Columbus to 46 points, six points clear of sixth-place Toronto FC in the race for the MLS Cup Playoffs.

The Crew next plays on Sunday, October 19 at the New York Red Bulls (3:00 p.m. ET, Time Warner Cable SportsChannel) in the final road clash of 2014. The match is set to air nationally on UniMas.
