PES 2016 launched a full week before the highly-anticipated FIFA 16 in what some viewed as a huge gamble by the gaming giants at Konami. It proved to be one of the wisest decisions in years as PES 2016 is an absolutely incredible game. A week head start was invaluable, giving even more consumers a chance to try out the best Konami soccer product in years, perhaps since Winning Eleven was king on the PS2.
PES 2015 received rave reviews, but this year’s game takes it to a whole new level. Every aspect of the game is vastly improved, including the most licensed teams and competitions in the history of the series. Those pesky “generic” teams are still there, but thankfully there are not so many. That is a major improvement in itself.
UEFA Champions League and Europe League remain exclusive to PES, which is a major coup for Konami. This exclusivity also applies to both the Copa Libertadores and the Copa Sudamericana, two world-class events from South America. The latter two may not have the glitz and glamour of the Champions Leauge, but they are great competitions nonetheless.
The game’s menus allow for even easier navigation, while the sound effects (and incredible soundtrack by the way) help create a realistic and enjoyable environment and experience. Gameplay, which has always been a strength in the series, continues to be world-class in every regard. Player movement is clean, crisp, and very realistic.
The AI is incredible as are the graphics. Players actually move, act, and look like their real-life counterparts. Colors are vivid, not washed out. Simply put, you’re going to get your money out of your HD television.
Master League remains our favorite, a clear go-to option. It gives you more of the simulation and management side of the game. PES 2016 as a whole has more of a Football Manager-esque quality this year, giving you a depth that was just never there before. It’s equally enjoyable to play, coach, and manage.
Overall the game is a must-have for casual and hardcore gamers alike. We certainly know there are hordes of PES disciples out there that won’t miss this one. But more people, even those that are unfamiliar with the series or weren’t satisfied by previous editions, should experience the game. PES 2016 is a title that can actually rival FIFA 16.
