Footballer Alan Shearer and author Tony Matthews have something in common.  It’s the word prolific.

Shearer scored 379 goals over 734 appearances, spending time with the likes of Southampton, Blackburn Rovers, and Newcastle United in addition to representing England at the international level.  Matthews, on the other hand, has penned over 125 books on the subject of football, more than any other UK-based writer.

We’ve loved Matthews’ titles in the past and that is still the case with Alan Shearer: Fifty Defining Fixtures from Amberley Publishing.  Matthews and Amberley are a great combination, one that brings great football, history, and literature together in one.

Matthews has a great football mind, someone that knows what readers really want.  We love the idea of “fifty fixtures” as it generates lots of discussion and debate.  This title produces does just that.

You’ll hear about memorable matches from his time playing for Southampton, Blackburn, Newcastle, and England. The matches, dating from 1988 to 2006, are retold in the perfect amount of detail,  not long and not too brief.

It’s a great journey, one that will be enjoyed by many.  It’s especially great for those that follow Newcastle as it takes them back to better times, now that the club has been relegated.  It’s also an opportunity for fans and supporters to reflect on a legendary career, a player that was named to the FIFA 100, a list of the world’s greatest living players.

Simply put, it is a must-have.
