Real Monarchs midfielder Tyler Arnone has found himself moving further and further out west. The Hicksville, New York native first accepted a scholarship offer to St. John’s University, but it wasn’t for him.
“Right away I knew it wasn’t the greatest fit socially, academically, or athletically. It wasn’t the college experience I wanted.”
Arnone soon transferred to the University of Michigan, where he made a name for himself by tallying 10 goals and 14 assists in 74 games for the Wolverines. During his time at Michigan, Arnone left quite an impression on his peers.
“I always looked up to TA as he was one of the top players in New York growing up,” said former teammate and current Michigan midfielder Brett Nason. “He taught me a lot about leadership (Arnone was a captain at UM), hard work, and how to develop certain parts of my game so I can be successful at the college level. He’s helped me become both a better player and a better leader.”
During his college summers, Arnone honed his craft with Detroit City FC of the National Premier Soccer League (NPSL). He did so with hopes of one day being drafted to MLS.
“Playing in the NPSL helped me stay in shape and stay sharp on the pitch,” Arnone added.
He has particularly fond memories of his time with Detroit City.
“Detroit City had one of the best atmospheres I have ever experienced. The fans made it a hostile environment with their cheering and chanting. Definitely one of the cooler experiences of my soccer career.”
Although the Michigan alum did not hear his name called during the 2015 SuperDraft, he still had opportunities to further his soccer career. The Real Monarchs, a USL affiliate of MLS side Real Salt Lake and a brand new franchise at the time, called Arnone, offering him a spot on the team. Arnone has been with the Monarchs ever since.
The midfielder now starts for the team and has recorded two goals in his time with the club. All the while, he has been blown away by the Monarchs’ organization.
“So far, my experience with the Monarchs has been great. They are very professional in how they’re ran. Real Salt Lake treats us as well as the first team. Everything from the resources to the training ground is top-notch. They just do it right out here.”
Arnone has also found himself enjoying his new home.
“I like it out here. I like the slower-paced lifestyle as compared to the hustle and bustle that is New York City. The state (of Utah) is beautiful. A lot to do in the outdoors – hiking, skiing, camping – you name it. The people are great too. Salt Lake is a great place for soccer because of the limited sports market. I’d say Real Salt Lake is the most popular sport here, second only to the Utah Jazz (of the NBA).”
If soccer doesn’t work out Arnone could have a career as the spokesman for Utah’s tourist industry. All kidding aside, Tyler Arnone has a long way to go before moving on from soccer.
“My long-term goal with the sport is to play as long as possible. More immediately, I hope to one day play for Real Salt Lake or somewhere in MLS. All the while, I want to continue to work hard and to cherish these experiences. After that, I would pretty much entertain anything.”
Tyler Arnone has come a long way (literally) from New York. Make sure to remember his name, as he may be making plays in MLS someday soon.
For now you can catch his next home game on July 22, when the Monarchs faces Arizona United. The game will not be played at Rio Tinto Stadium, but will instead take place at Utah Valley University, a 45-minute drive from Salt Lake City.
