Men’s Soccer: Mount Union Ties Washington and Jefferson After Double Overtime Game

Editor September 10, 2016

The Mount Union men’s soccer team tied Washington and Jefferson (Pa.) 1-1 Saturday afternoon.

Both Mount Union (1-1-2) and Washington and Jefferson (1-1-1) fought hard to tally a point in the first 45 minutes of play. Mount Union juniors Jesse Tinney (Heidelberg, Pa./Chartiers Valley) and Scott Welker (Solon/Solon), sophomore Ian Moorhead (Apollo, Pa./Kiski Area), and freshman Jon Schroeder (Parma/Normandy) attempted to score in the first half but didn’t have any success. The teams went into halftime tied at zero.

In the second half, Washington and Jefferson’s Kyle Wisniewski, Christian Payne, and Michael DeSabato each received a yellow card, along with Purple Raider goalkeeper, senior Dylan Lias (Cuyahoga Falls/Cuyahoga Falls).

The game was tied at zero until Purple Raider junior Johny Akindipe (Twinsburg/CVCA) found the back of the goal after receiving a pass from sophomore Jake Clark (Chardon/West Geauga) in the 82nd minute. The Raiders went into the final minute of play when Washington and Jefferson’s Christian Payne headed the ball into the goal, tying the game at one and sending the teams into overtime.

After two ten-minute overtime halves, the score was still tied at 1, resulting in a final score of 1-1.

The Raiders’ next game is against Geneva (Pa.) on Tuesday, Sept. 13 at home at 7 p.m.
