SoCal SC forward Roonie Moreno has been selected as the fifth Mitre National Player of the Week for the 2017 NPSL season.

“We’ve had two tough weeks before this match and I was very happy that everything we trained during the week was well executed on the field,” Moreno commented. “As a striker, I always work to score goals and I am glad that I could make it on the opportunities I had.”

Moreno scored a brace in SoCal’s 3-0 win over Corinthians USA.  He has competed in a total of four NPSL matches this season, playing a total of 288 minutes.

“It’s a tremendous achievement for such a hard-working and talented player as Roonie Moreno,” SoCal SC GM Daniel Gamba added. “We were very pleased with his performance last week, but we think he can do so much more because of he hasn’t reached his full potential this season yet. As a club, we are honored to have him as our first Mitre National Player of the Week, and hopefully this is just the beginning of bigger things for us in the near future.”

Moreno is a 24-year-old Colombian forward that played in the youth system of Argentinean side Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata and was also part of the academy of Major League Soccer’s New England Revolution in 2010.  On the following year, he headed back to Argentina to sign for Defensores de Belgrano, where he made his professional debut.

In 2012, Moreno was transferred to Al Najran Sport Club of Saudi Arabia’s first division.  He played in Argentina again in 2013, when he was part of Monterrico San Vicente’s roster. The forward returned to the United States in 2015 and signed with SoCal SC in 2017.

“He’s a very good player, who brings experience, strength, and an outstanding final touch to our team and that’s why I insisted a lot to have him on our roster us this season,” SoCal SC Head Coach Daniel Musatti concluded. “Roonie had a very good performance last match because he perfectly executed what we planned during the week and the team knew how to take advantage of his skills. He couldn’t have made it without the other players. We see this award as a prize for the entire club and as a signal that the coaching staff is making the right choices and that the players are getting the job done on the field.”

The winner of this national honor is determined by a vote of media members from across the country.  It is awarded every week during the regular season.
