Derek and Nigel (Review)

Editor January 23, 2019

Derek Bevan and Nigel Owens are two of the best rugby referees that the world has ever seen.  And they both happen to have a lot in common.  They are passionate about the game and they both hail from Wales.  They are great friends who share a great sense of humor and tell amazing stories.

It’s no wonder that Y Lolfa decided that they would be the perfect subjects for a book.  Paired with the always brilliant Alun Gibbard, the end result is a rugby masterpiece and one of the great titles of 2018.

Bevan and Owens bring the readers close to the action with great stories and a behind-the-scenes look at the world of top-flight rugby that has honestly never been seen before.  It’s a fresh perspective and a new view of the game.

Yes, there are plenty of stories about the top players and coaches in rugby, but what about the referees? Stories about rugby referees are hard to come by.

Derek and Nigel: Two Heads, One Tale has a candid, conversational vibe that works incredibly well.  At the same time, you hear about the training, pressure, big games, and the overall roller coaster journey of being a top rugby referee.

Everything is covered from the World Cup to local rugby to the infamous “Bloodgate” game that resulted in bans and fines for many.  It’s done in a way where the pages fly by as the reader is engrossed by incredible stories from two men that have literally seen it all.  High-quality photographs complement the text throughout the book’s 153 pages.

As a whole, the title is an entertaining read that would be welcomed by any rugby fan.
