Sources in Europe and the U.S. report that several MLS clubs have expressed an interest in signing Alvaro Recoba. The striker has spent time with Panionios, Torino, and Venezia. His best years were with Internazionale of Serie A.
Blackburn and Perth Glory (A-League) had previously expressed interest in Recoba, a member of the Uruguay national team that participated in the 2002 World Cup. Neither club was able to come to terms with the former Inter Milan star, who would be a surefire Designated Player in Major League Soccer.
His signing would quickly put MLS back on the world soccer map. It would easily be one of the most important events in the history of the league.
ESPN Soccernet’s Jen Chang described Recoba as “one of the best backup strikers in the world.” He is currently the best player in the Greek Super League and would give Landon Donovan a “run for his money” as the best player to play on American soil.
