The University of Akron (0-1) women’s soccer team fell in the regular season opener to Purdue University (1-0) by a score of 5-0 on Friday evening at the Boilermaker Complex.
In their first game of Boilermaker Cup, Akron was unable to push a goal past the Purdue defense. Purdue’s starting goalkeeper, Clara Kridler, shutout Akron in the first half with two saves. Kridler was one of three goalies utilized by Purdue on Friday.
Overall, the Zips offense registered three shots on goal, which came from Megan Waskowski, Karin Norman and Abby Gindlesberger. Both Norman and Gindlesberger played their first collegiate games for Akron on Friday night.
The Purdue Boilermaker’s Maddy Williams led the match with two goals, one assist and four shots on goal in the victory over the Zips.
Sophomore goalkeeper Klaire Adee started for the Zips in goal, and allowed four goals and registered four saves while spending 45 minutes in goal.
Redshirt sophomore Alex Luevano-Harden finished the game at goalie for Akron, and allowed one goal in 45 minutes of work. She tallied two saves in her second half appearance.
Junior Kelly DeNiro was the lone Akron player to be on the pitch for the full 90 minutes of Friday’s match. DeNiro is one assist away from the career assist record for Zips women’s soccer.
The Zips will finalize their time at the Boilermaker Cup on Sunday morning against the North Dakota Fighting Sioux at 11:00 a.m., in the Boilermaker Complex.
