Andrew Weber Named Mitre National Player of the Week

Editor April 1, 2017

FC Arizona goalkeeper Andrew Weber has been selected as the third Mitre National Player of the Week for the 2017 NPSL season.

“I am honored to receive this award,” Weber commented. “It wouldn’t have been without my teammates and coaches. I want to thank them for their continued dedication and hard work.”

Weber made several key saves to preserve the team’s third consecutive shutout on Saturday, a 1-0 win over Albion SC PROS.  Weber made a total of eight saves over the past three games, all three of them starts.

“Andrew has been a leader on and off the field,” FC Arizona head coach Aidan Davison added. “On the field he has brought a consistent and mature performance level. He is a model pro and a credit to his profession.”

Weber is no stranger to the professional game, having played eleven seasons in the United Soccer League (USL) and Major League Soccer (MLS) with D.C. United, Montreal Impact, San Jose Earthquakes, Seattle Sounders FC, and Portland Timbers.  He has competed in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, CONCACAF Champions League, and MLS Cup, winning the latter as a member of the Timbers in 2015.

“Andrew and the defense back line have been amazing,” FC Arizona owner Scott Taylor concluded. “Four straight games with a clean sheet is really impressive.”

A four-year starter at the University of New Mexico from 2001-04, Weber finished his collegiate career as their career leader in several goalkeeping categories, including games played (83), minutes played (7,681), wins (50), saves (350), and shutouts (25).  He was a three-time all-conference and two-time all-region performer for the Lobos in addition to being named the MPSF Goalkeeper of the Year (2002).

He and his twin brother, Elliot, were contestants on the reality TV show “The Amazing Race” in Asunción, Paraguay, in 2005.

The winner of this national honor is determined by a vote of media members from across the country.  It is awarded every week during the regular season.
