Bayern Munich opened their FIFA Club World Cup campaign with a record-breaking performance, dismantling Auckland City FC 10-0 on Sunday afternoon at TQL Stadium in Cincinnati. A ruthless showing from the Bundesliga champions was headlined by Jamal Musiala’s second-half hat-trick and marked the largest win in the history of the men’s Club World Cup.
In front of a crowd of 21,152, Bayern showed no signs of easing into the tournament. Kingsley Coman opened the scoring in the 6th minute with a powerful header at the far post off a Joshua Kimmich corner. From there, the floodgates opened. Sacha Boey netted his first goal for the club in the 18th minute, hammering home a low shot from a Coman assist. Just two minutes later, Michael Olise tapped in from close range to make it 3-0, and Coman followed up with his second of the match in the 21st minute.
Veteran forward Thomas Müller added a fifth with a volley in the 45th minute before Olise curled in a stunning effort during stoppage time, giving Bayern a commanding 6-0 lead at halftime.
With the result all but secured, head coach Vincent Kompany rotated heavily, handing a senior debut to 17-year-old Lennart Karl and introducing Musiala just past the hour mark in a return from injury. The young star wasted no time announcing himself. In the 67th minute, Musiala curled in his first from the edge of the box. Six minutes later, he calmly slotted home a penalty he earned himself, and then completed his hat trick in the 84th minute after capitalizing on a defensive error.
Müller put the exclamation point on Bayern’s dominant performance with his second goal in the 89th minute, sealing an emphatic 10-0 victory that sent a clear message to the rest of the tournament field.
For Auckland City, the scoreline was harsh but not unexpected. The semi-professional New Zealand side, which includes players who took time off from day jobs to travel to the United States, faced an enormous challenge in trying to slow one of Europe’s elite clubs.
“[I’m] really proud,” said Auckland City head coach Ivan Vicelich. “To be proud of the players is what we’re after. It’s a dream coming from an amateur level to play in this environment.”
Bayern’s dominance sets up a highly anticipated clash against Boca Juniors on Friday, a marquee showdown between two of the sport’s most storied clubs. Auckland City, meanwhile, will regroup ahead of their next Group C match against Benfica.
