The Columbus Crew (4-6-8, 20 points) fell on the road to the New York Red Bulls (5-5-8, 23 points) at Red Bull Arena on Saturday night by a final score of 4-1.
“It is a tough result but, you know, I thought, going forward, we did create some really good chances,” Crew forward Adam Bedell stated. “Just couldn’t capitalize. Back to the drawing board. Get back to training on Monday [and] work towards Wednesday. You put this one out of your head and work towards the next one.”
New York opened the scoring through MLS Golden Boot leader Bradley Wright-Phillips, who finished a Red Bull passing sequence in the 17th minute. After an injury to Jairo Arrieta, Bedell came on and recorded his first career MLS goal, scoring in the 39th minute to level the match.
New York’s Thierry Henry put his side ahead 2-1 just before halftime after finishing a rebound following a Steve Clark save off the line. In the second half, Lloyd Sam made it 3-1 for the Red Bulls, again assisted by Henry. After Bernardo Anor was sent off in the 85th minute of play, Henry provided his third assist of the night on an Alexander goal to make it 4-1 in stoppage-time.
The Crew next plays on Wednesday, July 16 when it returns home to face defending MLS Cup champion Sporting Kansas City at Crew Stadium (7:30 p.m. ET / Time Warner Cable SportsChannel).
