While in Cancun, Mexico, for Crew’s preseason training camp, Columbus Crew SC head coach Caleb Porter spoke with reporters ahead of the 2020 MLS season that is just under a month from officially kicking off.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, much of the talk of the conference call was on the newest members of the Crew – along with the departure of longtime team captain Wil Trapp. Porter spoke highly of Trapp, who was traded to Inter Miami on January 31, and spoke of the respect he had for him. Porter noted that Trapp was given the opportunity to say goodbye in person to his teammates and also noted how he was “here to honor the past and build on it” referring to the veteran Crew midfielder leaving.
In regards to a new club captain, it did not seem to be a pressing worry for Porter. He noted that anyone on the leadership council of six to eight players could be the captain. “There will be a new captain, but I’ve never felt there should be just one leader,” Porter said, highlighting just how important good team chemistry, trust, and internal accountability will be within the team.
The man expected to take his place in the midfield in the starting eleven, Darlington Nagbe, received glowing reviews from his coach.
“I’ve known Darlington since he was 15 years old,” said Porter, speaking upon their connection dating all the way back through their time at both Akron and Portland Timbers together. “I’ve always felt he’s one of the most special players our country has ever seen.” Speaking on what he appreciates about Nagbe’s skill set, Porter noted his skill on the ball, ability to retain the ball, and an ability to dictate the tempo of the midfield and escape pressure from a high press.
Between Nagbe and Artur as first-choice center midfielders, and Aidan Morris and Sebastian Berhalter as homegrown signings as depth, Porter stated that he was happy with where Crew are in midfield depth. When asked about a possible other signing, he noted that it would likely depend on how the rookies evolve and who is available on the market.
Porter also touched upon the other four key men brought in in this offseason. Lucas Zelarayan was signed from Tigres UNAL for a club-record transfer fee and was highlighted as a “special” player – though he may need some time to get on the same wavelength as his teammates.
Vito Wormgoor was another player who got immediate stamps of approval from the head coach. The center back who has over 160 appearances in the Eredivisie to his name, joins the side from SK Brann in Norway after three years there.
Porter raved about his humble, yet confident, new center back, saying, “He’s the man. He looks the part. He plays the part.” Porter noted that he needs two central defenders to “boss” the back line and Wormgoor and Jonathan Mensah are expected to be that.
Finally, Fernando Adi and Derrick Etienne serve as a pair of experienced depth signings. Adi is set to serve as the back-up to Gyasi Zardes to start, but Porter said he will be getting game time. Etienne was highlighted as a quick player that can stretch defenses out on the wings, and serves as a good option for deputized Luis Diaz.
As March 1st continues to approach, the team continue to work at getting comfortable together all gelling as a cohesive team unit. With excitement abound the Crew ahead of 2020, Porter had plenty positive to say about his side and the newest members to the side, while noting his respect for those like Trapp who had made their mark on the franchise.
