The Canton Rugby Club won a first place trophy July 16 at the annual Medieval 7’s Rugby Tournament hosted by the Pittsburgh Harlequins Rugby Club in Pittsburgh, PA.
Canton finished 5-1 on the day and advanced to the championship finals to face Happy Valley (Penn State), a game which resulted in a 24-15 victory for the Canton Maddogs. Scoring tries for Canton were Mike Stoll (2), Chad Menegay, and Kyle Albaugh.
Canton defeated the Pittsburgh Harlequins C-side 33-0 with scores from Albaugh (2), Stoll (2), and Eugene Naude. They beat Scioto Valley 38-7 with scores from Stoll (3), Mike Kane, Rich Maylor, and Albaugh. Canton defeated Old Gaelic 33-10 with scores from Jesse Janson, Kane, Albaugh, and Maylor. They lost to Pitt City 21-14 with tries from Naude and Stoll.
The Canton Rugby Club will resume open practices for anyone interested in joining every Tuesday and Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Weis Park starting July 26. The Maddogs will travel to Bucyrus, Ohio August 20 for a final summer tournament hosted by the Marion Rugby Club. The fall season will begin the first week of September.
