Don Wright is arguably the world’s top expert on Nottingham Forest, serving as the club’s historian. He already authored the definitive text on Forest, Forever Forest: The Official 150th Anniversary History of the Original Reds, in 2015. It quickly became a must-have and a fan favorite for all of those that love the Reds.
It’s hard to believe but Clough and Walker: Forest’s Greatest Managers is an even better read.
Everyone likes to talk about Brian Clough and a number of books have already been written about his life and career. However, none have this kind of depth and none of them include the likes of Billy Walker and Peter Taylor in this kind of detail. Walker and Taylor are incredibly important pieces when considering the success of Forest over the years. Walker was simply the club’s longest-serving manager; Taylor was Clough’s right-hand man, an inseparable force on the Nottingham touchline.
Wright does a masterful job comparing and contrasting the careers, styles, and accomplishments of Clough and Walker. It’s something that hadn’t been done before and it was a something that was needed in the realm of football discourse. The discussion of Taylor’s importance to club and Clough is a welcome one, something that is truly deserved. The story of Clough and Walker is really the story of Forest and Wright tells that story brilliantly. His ability to share stories and to produce incredible content is uncanny. The fact that there are dozens of one-of-a-kind photographs is an added bonus.
This is a delightful text from cover to cover, something that deserves a place on your bookshelf. We love what Amberley Publishing did 2016 and are extremely excited to see what they have to offer in 2017.
