Editor December 7, 2012

The University of Akron Department of Athletics will host a special event next Wednesday, Dec. 12, to thank Caleb Porter for seven historic seasons as head coach of the Zips men’s soccer program.

The public is invited to attend the free celebration, which will run from 6-8 p.m., on the FirstMerit Foundation Club Level (fifth floor) of InfoCision Stadium – Summa Field. Please RSVP to Nancy Stott at nsstott@uakron.edu or (330) 972-6895 by 4 p.m., Monday (Dec. 10), if you would like to attend.

A social hour from 6-7 p.m., will start off the evening. UA President Dr. Luis M. Proenza, Director of Athletics Tom Wistrcill and Coach Porter are scheduled to address the audience beginning at 7 p.m. Light hors d’oeuvres will be served and a cash bar will be available.

Since 2006, Coach Porter posted the highest winning percentage in the country with a career record of 123-18-17 (.832). He led Akron to the school’s first team national championship in any sport in 2010 and was named the National Coach of the Year in 2009 after guiding the Zips to their first of back-to-back national championship game apearances.

Coach Porter, a six-time Mid-American Conference Coach of the Year, secured a MAC Regular Season Championship each season at UA and five MAC Tournament titles overall while taking the Zips to the NCAA’s Round of 16 or better five consecutive seasons from 2008-12. He will become the head coach of the Portland Timbers of Major League Soccer later this month.

Zips Athletics is encouraging fans to tweet a personal thank you to Coach Porter by using the hashtag #ThanksCaleb via Twitter.
