FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada 2015™ Recap

The first round, also called the group stage, in the ongoing FIFA Women’s World Cup came to an end on Wednesday in Canada 16 of 24 teams advancing to the second round of the tournament leaving behind eight teams who now have to pack up and head home.

Groups E and F capped up the first round with Brazil securing their place after a 1-0 win over Costa Rica while Korea Republic sent Spain packing with their 2-1 victory. In Group F, France and England secured their spots in the second round after defeating Mexico and Colombia respectively.  France won 5-0 over Mexico while England advanced on a 2-1 win over Colombia, who will also be advancing based on points.

Group A: Topping the group with 5 points, host nation Canada advanced to the second round of the tournament following their 1-1 draw against Netherlands. Occupying the second spot, China played out a 2-2 draw against New Zealand to gain access to the second round in the tournament while Netherlands, who are tied at four points in the group, also sealed their spot in the round of 16.

Group B: Undoubtedly the toughest team in the tournament, Germany topped their Group B with seven points, they secured their first place spot with a 4-1 win over Thailand. Norway became the second team to qualify from the group following their 3-1 victory over Ivory Coast.

Group C: Defending champions Japan who topped the group became the first team to win all three group games in the competition, Yuki Ogimi’s goal secured their first place position in the group and sent Ecuador home. Cameroon advanced to the second round in the tournament following their 2-1 victory over Switzerland in Edmonton. Switzerland will go on to the round of 16 based on points.

Group D: The USWNT team advanced to the second rounds in the ongoing FIFA Women’s World Cup in Canada. U.S. veteran player Abby Wambach scored just seconds before the end of the first half of the game, the lone goal sealed the deal for the team in the game which ended in a 1-0 victory over the Super Falcons of Nigeria. Australia and Sweden who finished second and third place respectively, have also advanced to the second round in Canada.
