Sporting legends were not immune from the effects of World War II, a tragic conflict that killed millions. The rugby community was particularly affected as 58 internationals were killed in the conflict.
Final Scrum: Rugby Internationals Killed in the Second World War, an offering from Pen & Sword, tells the story of the 14 Scottish, 14 English, three Welsh, eight Irish, nine Australian, two New Zealander, and eight French players that lost their lives fighting against the evils of the Axis powers.
Nigel McCreery does a great job providing these fallen heroes with a proper tribute. Each player is given several pages to cover an individual biography that covers club and international careers, military service, circumstances surrounding their death, and historical photos.
The text also features an excellent discussion of rugby during wartime. It’s a fascinating read from start to finish.
Overall this title is an inspiring and moving text that is fitting for the world’s great generation. These brave men and their sacrifices for all of mankind are captured in the proper light and it’s a great fit for history buffs and rugby supporters alike.
