Hartwick Ends Streak for UA Men’s Soccer

The No. 9 University of Akron men’s soccer team saw its NCAA record-setting conference unbeaten streak come to an end in a 2-0 defeat to Hartwick Saturday at FirstEnergy Stadium – Cub Cadet Field.

The Zips (7-3-0, 2-1-0 Mid-American Conference) dominated the game – out-shooting the Hawks 27-6 overall and 13-2 on frame – yet lost two moments, allowing a restart goal in the 65th minute and a counter attack score in the 86th. It was UA’s first conference defeat since 2006, snapping a string of 49 (46-0-3) unbeaten matches.

Much like its 1-0 setback against VCU last month, Akron created a number of quality scoring chances, including 16 corner kicks while allowing none, but couldn’t finish. While the Zips pressured the Hartwick goal throughout the match, Hawks goalkeeper Mateo Munarriz was the difference maker, turning away a total of 13 shots to post his second shutout of the fall.

Hartwick broke a scoreless tie midway through the second half when Kit Tregear flicked home a long throw in from Jack Miller.

Akron had a great opportunity to pull even in the 85th minute when a Hawks defender was called for a hand ball in the penalty area. Zips senior Reinaldo Brenes took the subsequent penalty kick, but couldn’t convert.

With UA throwing numbers forward, Hartwick capitalized on a breakaway to put the game away. Marc Russell made a long run before crossing the ball to Chris Walter, who finished from close range.

Eric Stevenson led the Zips attack with seven shots, including four on goal, followed by Adam Najem and Brenes, who finished with five shots apiece.

The Zips will have an opportunity to get back on track when they make a short trip north to take on Cleveland State Wednesday at 7 p.m. ET.
