International Champions Cup China to Feature Manchester Derby in Beijing

Editor March 23, 2016

Relevent Sports, Catalyst Media Group, and LeSports today revealed the planned line-up and match schedule for the second edition of the International Champions Cup China (ICC China), featuring the first-ever ‘Manchester Derby’ to occur outside of the United Kingdom and a tournament debut for Borussia Dortmund.

The announcement in China completes the field for the entire global ICC which will feature concurrent tournaments in North America and Australia as well as China.

In China, Manchester United will open the tournament in Shanghai against Borussia Dortmund on July 22nd.

The Red Devils will then travel to Beijing for what promises to be another land-mark ICC moment – a clash with cross-town rival Manchester City that will mark the tournament’s first appearance in the Chinese capital.

ICC China will then conclude in Shenzen as Dortmund take on Manchester City on July 28.

“After the first edition of International Champions Cup China set a high benchmark for fans, clubs and commercial partners, we needed to deliver something extra special for 2016,” said David Tyler, CEO of Relevent Sports. “We believe staging the first ever Manchester Derby outside of the United Kingdom in Beijing is certainly special. And Borussia Dortmund, who played a Champions League final most recently in 2013, will be formidable and thrilling opponents for Manchester City and United.”

On Tuesday in New York, the full schedule and teams were announced in a press conference at the Dream Hotel. This year’s North American ICC will take place from July 23 to August 13 and will be played in both the United States and Europe as in 2015 and 2013.

The teams are Real Madrid, FC Barcelona, FC Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea FC, Liverpool F.C., F.C. Internazionale, A.C. Milan, Celtic F.C. and Leicester F.C.

Matches will take place at such iconic stadiums such as The Rose Bowl (Pasadena, CA), Ohio Stadium (Columbus, OH), MetLife Stadium (East Rutherford, NJ) and Aviva Stadium (Dublin, Ireland).

The two announcements follow on the heels of the launch of the second ICC Australia to be played from at the Melbourne Cricket Ground from July 23 to 29. The tournaments features top European clubs such as Tottenham Hotspur F.C., Juventus F.C., Atletico de Madrid and the Melbourne Victory F.C.
