Even though Hudson HS was bounced from the state girls’ soccer tourney last week, it still was a tremendous and historic season.

The program, which found itself among the country’s best on the NSCAA National Poll, took a major step forward in terms of notoriety and recognition this year. Always thought to be one of Ohio’s best, Hudson found itself in the national spotlight.

“It is a pleasure to be afforded the opportunity to coach a program that has so many talented student-athletes who are also outstanding young adults,” Hudson HS head coach Costa Kalorides stated. “Knowing how many other talented programs are named to the NSCAA National Top 25, our players were humbled and honored to be included in such an impressive group of high school soccer programs.”

All of the success starts with the man in charge, someone who leads with a sense of tradition and a keen eye for player development. Hudson’s program began in 1987 and it has experienced success from the very beginning. Hudson, a three-time state finalist, has a 359-129-69 overall record with one state championship, five regional titles, and eleven district titles.

Kalorides’ players have moved on to play for Division I, II, and III programs and this year’s squad looks to be quite a bumper crop of college-ready talent.

The program’s success starts with junior forward Erin Torrence, who led the Explorers’ attack with 23 goals and three assists. These strong numbers put her sixth all-time in Hudson HS history for single seasons goals, single season points, and career goals.

Their defense continues to be a real strength for the squad. Defenders Allie Dunne, Victoria Breeden, Maddy Waters, and Taylor Koscho have anchored a defense that has allowed only eight goals in 17 games and recorded 13 shutouts. Junior goalkeeper Sarah L’Hommedieu deserves loads of credit as well as she is a commanding and athletic presence between the posts.

The future of the program looks to be in good hands thanks to a strong group of underclassmen. Sophmore midfielders Kim Ito, Claire McIsaac, and Rayna McLean are already key contributors to the team and they each have two years of eligibility remaining.

Hudson HS is definitely not a one-sport school as they have experienced great success in other areas. Football, basketball, swimming, wrestling, baseball, lacrosse, and cross country are quite popular and each has experienced their own levels of success.

Soccer has been extremely popular in the district for decades and continues to grow. This shows that soccer has a bright future in Hudson and NE Ohio as a whole. All of this was made possible due to the hard work of Kalorides and his girls’ soccer program.

The ISN Ultimate 11 began as an effort to recognize the very best of high school soccer, a side of the game often neglected by the national media. That is certainly no longer the case as ISN leads the way in promoting the game at this level, honoring the young men and women that are the future of the sport.

Promotion of the ISN Ultimate XI will culminate in a major multi-state event in the summer of 2015.
