CF Monterrey scored early and often to solidify their win over Canadian side Forge FC in CONCACAF Champions Cup action at Estadio BBVA on Tuesday night. A double from Argentine striker Germán Berterame and a goal from Jordi Cortizo helped Los Rayados secure a 5-0 aggregate win over the Canadians.
Despite some promising early shots on goal from Forge, it was instead Monterrey that opened the scoring in this game. Germán Berterame broke the deadlock in the 20th minute to give the hosts a deserved lead off of a fantastic set-piece pass from Jésus Manuel Corona.
Monterrey came out of the break with the same intensity that they started with, doubling their advantage through Cortizo just three minutes into the second half. Berterame would put the result beyond doubt ten minutes later, completing his brace in the 58th minute and cementing his Man of the Match performance.
The Canadian Premier League side showed moments of resistance throughout the second half but continued to struggle to find the back of the net for the remainder of the game. The Rayados backline maintained their composure for the rest of the game despite Stefan Medina and Jorge Rodríguez both cautioned in the final ten minutes.
The victory was particularly significant for Monterrey as it marked their 18th clean sheet at Estadio BBVA since the change in competition format in 2008, further solidifying their reputation as one of the region’s most formidable home teams. The match played in front of a raucous crowd, showcased the growing gap between some of the established Liga MX powerhouses and emerging clubs from newer leagues in the region.
For Forge FC, despite the defeat, the experience of competing against one of Mexico’s premier clubs provides valuable lessons as they continue their continental campaign. The Canadian side now moves into pre-season training ahead of their season opener against fellow Champions Cup qualifiers Calvary FC on April 5th.
