The Mount Union men’s soccer team defeated Marietta in overtime 2-1 to complete their first Ohio Athletic Conference victory of the season.
Sophomore Jonathan Akindipe scored the winning goal in overtime as he slid in to shoot the ball into the top corner of the goal to seal the victory for the Purple Raiders in the 97th minute.
Marietta (6-6, 1-1) scored its only goal of the game in the 72nd minute when Tyler Bro corralled a ball off of a corner and put it in the back of the net to give the Pioneers a 1-0 lead.
Mount Union (6-3-1, 1-1) was awarded a penalty shot in the 80th minute for a handball in the box by a Marietta defender. Sophomore Aaron Liezert lined up to take the penalty kick for the Raiders but was stopped by Marietta goal keeper Tyler Sholl.
Mount Union tied the game at 1-1 in the 86th minute as Akindipe scored a goal on a pass from senior Mitchell Tiah to force the game into overtime.
Mount Union next travels to Ohio Northern on Saturday, October 10 at 7 pm.
