The Mount Union men’s soccer team faced a 3-0 loss in their season opener Thursday night against Case Western Reserve University.
The Purple Raiders (0-1) held off the Spartans (1-0) until Paul Darmstadter found the back of the Raiders’ net at the 25:14 mark. Junior Nik Newhart (Mentor/Lake Catholic) had a shot on goal and senior goalkeeper Dylan Lias (Cuyahoga Falls/Cuyahoga Falls) recorded four saves in the half.
The Spartans struck again in the second half, when Joshua Prosser scored two goals in the 49th and 80th minutes of play. Junior Stephen Dages (Uniontown/Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary), freshman Daniel Chung (Stow/CVCA), and sophomore Ian Moorhead (Apollo Pa./Kiski Area) each recorded a shot in the second half, but the Raiders were unable to answer any of the Spartans’ goals.
The Raiders face Carnegie Mellon (Pa.) on Saturday, September 3 at 5:00 p.m. at Mount Union Stadium.
