We have received word from multiple sources that a letter of intent has been signed by a group looking to buy the Cleveland City Stars. It is good news and possibly the end of this story.
Several outlets are speculating that a Canadian group, based in Ottawa, has purchased the club. This seems to be far fetched considering none of our contacts in Canada knew anything about the situation. Our sources in Canada also confirmed that there was no discussion about moving the Cleveland club north out of the U.S. Ottawa reportedly will enter the USL’s First Division sometime around 2013 once stadium and logistical issues are resolved. The city does not appear to be ready for a USL club next season.
We had previously reported that the club had been purchased by a “U.S. based group”. This is still correct based on information received from multiple credible sources.
We feel that moving the club is still 50/50 at this point. We also feel that the Elkhart, Indiana group is the buyer of the club. It appears the other groups are no longer interested. There is always the possibility that a group came out of nowhere to make an offer.
