The Mount Union women’s soccer team blanked Bethany 6-0 on Saturday afternoon in the final match of Bethany (WV) College’s tournament.
The Purple Raiders move to 2-0 on the season and it marks back-to-back shutouts for the first time since 2011, when the Raiders defeated Oberlin 1-0 (Sept. 13, 2011) and Pitt-Greensburg 8-0 (Sept. 21, 2011).
Mount Union was led by sophomore Shannon Evans (Newbury/Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin), who notched her first career hat trick. She wasted no time as she put the Purple Raiders on the board first less than two minutes into the game while her other two scores came in the 24th and 57th minute.
Freshman Carolyn Balzano (Poland/Poland Seminary) had two goals while sophomore Kolbie Haines(Hudson/Hudson) netted her first goal of the season off a corner kick.
Junior Maria Favorite (Chesterland/Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin) faced nine shots on goal and made two saves for the shutout.
Mount Union returns to the pitch next weekend against Utica (N.Y.) in the first game of the 2013 Blue Devil Clarion Classic Friday, Sept. 6 at 2:30 p.m.
