Coombes Named National Player of the Week

The National Premier Soccer League is proud to announce its fourth National Player of the Week for the 2013 regular season.

The winner, for the week ending April 28th, is FC Santa Clarita Storm forward Tyler Coombes.

Coombes scored both goals in a 2-1 Storm win over FC Hasental. He was the team’s leading scorer in 2012 with 15 goals and 2 assists. The Palmdale, CA native has also played for the Lancaster Rattlers (PDL) and Rattlers F.C. (NPSL) after a college career at Taft Community College and Cal State LA.

The award, voted on by media from across the country, is part of the league’s commitment to honoring players, coaches, and staff for their exemplary work. The announcement is made on Fridays during the regular season exclusively on NPSL social media.

It has been a week of good news for Santa Clarita. Starting Storm goalkeeper Aaron Perez signed with the LA Blues of USL PRO. Perez, a former football player at UCLA, has had stints with the New England Patriots and Miami Dolphins as a punter.

NPSL Teams Advance in the U.S. Open Cup

The NPSL’s FC Hasental rallied for a 5-3 victory against US Club Soccer’s
Fresno Fuego Future and the Georgia Revolution (NPSL) needed penalty kicks
to top Colorado Rovers (USSSA) as the 100th edition of the Lamar Hunt U.S.
Open Cup got underway Tuesday night.

Hasental’s Gilberto Villalobos and Alberto Anguiano each scored a pair of
goals as the squad overcame an early third-minute deficit with four
straight tallies. Armando Gaitan also added a tally for Hasental. Fresno
Fuego Future’s Alex Caceres had the game’s first goal while teammates
Alberto Anguiano and Ferid Celosmanovic contributed second-half scores.

The victory means FC Hasental will face the PDL’s Ventura County Fusion in
the first round on May 14 at Ventura College in Ventura, Calif.

The Georgia Revolution garnered a lead in the 23rd minute from Ghana
native Kwadwo Poku, who collected a loose ball in the box and found the
back of the net. But Colorado Rovers made a game of it with Marc
Herschberger’s 76th-minute equalizer for his first goal of the tournament.
That pushed the match into overtime, and with both teams going scoreless
in extra time, Georgia prevailed by converting all five of its penalty
kicks for a 5-3 shootout victory.

The Revolution will host Real Colorado Foxes in first-round play on May 14.
