Women’s Soccer: Lanese Named OAC Player of the Week
Mount Union junior Nicole Lanese (Macedonia/Nordonia) was named the Ohio Athletic Conference Player of the Week (9/11).
This is the second straight week a Mount Union women’s soccer player has been named Player of the Week by the OAC after sophomore Maggie O’Donnell (Avon/Avon) was named it last week.
This is the second time in her career that Lanese has been honered with player of the week as she did it in the week of September 20, 2016 when she had a five goal game against Defiance.
Lanese scored four goals along with two assists and led the Purple Raiders to a 2-0 week.
Mount Union (4-0) will be in action again on the road at Penn State-Behrend on Wednesday, September 13 at 7 p.m.
Men’s Soccer: Schroeder Scores Game-Winner in Home Opener
Mount Union’s men’s soccer team (2-2) beat Westminster (1-2-1) by a final score of 2-1 in overtime on Saturday.
The game-winning goal came off the foot of sophomore Jon Schroeder (Parma/Normandy) in the 100th minute.
After a scoreless first half, Westminster scored the first goal of the game in the 67th minute off the foot of Justin Brandt. The Purple Raiders answered just five minutes later in the 72nd minute with a goal from freshman Ramon Bajeca (Middletown/Middletown) off an assist from senior Stephen Dages (Uniontown/Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary) to make the score 1-1 heading into overtime.
Mount Union will play again on Wednesday, September 13 at Geneva (PA.)
Women’s Soccer: Lanese Shines Bright as Mount Union Wins Home Opener Against Westminster
Mount Union’s women’s soccer team (4-0) defeated Westminster (3-1) by a score of 4-1 on Saturday.
The Purple Raiders were led by junior Nicole Lanese (Macedonia/Nordonia) as she sparked the Raiders with two goals and and two assists on the afternoon.
The scoring was started in the ninth minute by sophomore Maggie O’Donnell (Avon/Avon) off an assist from Lanese. Then Lanese added her first unassisted goal in the 21st minute to make the score 2-0 at halftime.
Lanese got the Raiders on the board early in the second half as she scored her second unassisted goal in the 46th minute. The Titans scored their only goal of the game in the 61st minute off the foot of Keely Birisic. The Raiders added their last goal in the 77th minute from senior Katie Goedecke (Cuyahoga Falls/Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary) off Lanese’s second assist of the afternoon.
Senior Paige Freel (Niles/Niles McKinley) faced 12 shots only allowing one goal in all 90 minutes.
Mount Union will go back on the road Wednesday, September 13 at Penn State-Behrend.
