Red Glory: Manchester United and Me (Review)

Editor May 12, 2018

Manchester United is one of the world’s biggest sporting brands with a valuation of over $3.69 billion in 2017.  That price point makes it the most valuable club in all of global soccer.   But the billions haven’t always been there with a club that came from humble beginnings.  In fact, the club was only valued at $2.7 million in 1980.  But Chairman Martin Edwards changed all of that, and in the process, made history.  Simply put, the rise of Edwards as a club executive matched the rise of United as a sporting superpower.

Yes, Red Glory: Manchester United and Me, an offering from Michael O’Mara Books, is the story of Martin Edwards, but it is also the history of nearly 30 years of a great English club.  This club accomplished greatness on and off the field and much of the credit goes to Martin Edwards.   He was there for the Class of ’92, the formation of the Premier League, and the brilliance of Sir Alex Ferguson.

During Edwards’ tenure, United became a global brand that is as known in China, India, and Malaysia as it is in Manchester.  He was there for so many of the club’s defining moments, whether it was winning hardware in England or Europe, the transfers of world-class players, or millions spent on upgrades to training facilities and Old Trafford.  Manchester United set the standard for sponsorship, player development, and most importantly, the fan experience.

If you are a fan of Man U, this is the ultimate behind-the-scenes look at a storied club and an absolute must-have.  It’s a brilliant and entertaining read from start to finish, one that gives you much appreciation for those that have made United the club it is today.
