Review: Thinking Inside the Box by Louis Saha

Editor August 22, 2012

Louis Saha is a special player.  And his autobiography, Thinking Inside the Box: Reflections on Life as a Premier League Footballer, is a special book. Saha gives you an insider’s look into the world’s most publicized league.

There are a lot of athlete biographies out there, but this one is different.  Saha is always honest and shares his passion and enthusiasm straight from the heart. The most powerful aspect is his journey to the EPL, which is the stuff of legends.  Working hard coupled with natural talent and a little bit of luck has been a winning formula for the current Sunderland striker.  You get a rare look into big clubs like Manchester United and Tottenham along with the French national team.

The style of Saha’s writing is also very approachable, having a conversational quality that makes you feel like a dear friend of this famous footballer.  He tells stories from his life, integrating quotes and passages from others to give the story multiple perspectives.

Saha never speaks badly of others and is quite open about the temptations of making it big.  You get the feeling that he must be one of the good guys in the beautiful game, considering  Zidane, Sir Alex, and Thierry Henry all appear in the book.  These legends give the book instant credibility, but also show you that Saha make it big and did it the right way, earning the respect of some big names along the way.

My only questions is how much higher could Saha have climbed if everything went right.  One of the best players in Europe? A World Cup hero? An EPL legend? We may never know.

This book is must have for any fan of the EPL or French football. Those looking for a story of hard work paying off will also enjoy this title.  I was a fan of Saha before, but I have to say my admiration of him has grown by leaps and bounds simply by reading this great story.
