RNYFC delivered their most emphatic performance of the season on Saturday afternoon, routing Niagara 1812 6-0 in sweltering conditions at the RNYFC Training Complex. The victory strengthens RNYFC’s position at the top of the NPSL’s Great Lakes Conference standings and marks the club’s largest margin of victory in its inaugural NPSL campaign.
The match, played under a blazing sun with temperatures soaring into the upper 80s, was a mostly one-sided match from the outset. Though it took time for the breakthrough to come, RNYFC’s sustained pressure eventually wore down the visitors, who were reduced to 10 men early in the second half after a critical defensive error.
Jan Makula opened the scoring in the 38th minute, latching onto a clever ball inside the box before burying his chance past Niagara goalkeeper Carson Provenzano. Aedan Burke doubled the advantage just before halftime, capitalizing on a scramble in the box to send RNYFC into the break up 2-0.
The match’s turning point came just five minutes into the second half. With RNYFC threatening again on the counterattack, Niagara goalkeeper Carson Provenzano rushed off his line and fouled an RNYFC attacker outside the 18-yard box. The referee ruled that this was a denial of an obvious goalscoring opportunity and showed a straight red card, leaving Niagara a man down and forcing an emergency substitution. Forward Jordan Prescod was sacrificed to bring on backup goalkeeper Nathan Russell.
With the numerical advantage and momentum squarely in their favor, RNYFC continued to pour forward. João Antonio Rocha made it 3-0 in the 56th minute, curling home a low effort after a well-worked team move. Four minutes later, Burke struck again, this time sliding into the box to finish off a driven cross for his second goal of the afternoon.
RNYFC rotated their lineup heavily down the stretch but didn’t let off the gas. In the 83rd minute, Matthew Torrell got on the scoresheet with a powerful finish following a well-placed pass from Jamison Railey. The scoring was capped in stoppage time when Michael Catanzarite finished a breakaway to seal the 6-0 result.
Niagara 1812, now in their second year in the league, struggled to build rhythm under intense pressure and now sit seventh in the Great Lakes Conference with a 1-1-6 record. The team will aim to rebound on Tuesday night when they host the Buffalo Stallions at North Tonawanda High School.
With the result, RNYFC improves to 6-0-1 and remains one of the top teams in the Great Lakes Conference. They will look to continue their strong run of form Wednesday night when they travel to Erie, Pennsylvania, to face the Erie Commodores FC at Mercyhurst University.
