Soccer Kicks Off for the University of Mount Union

Dominant Start for UMU Women

Mount Union opened up their 2017 campaign with an 8-0 victory over Thiel at Hiram on Saturday.

The Purple Raiders opened the scoring with a goal in the fourth minute by sophomore, Maggie O’Donnell (Avon/Avon) and followed up with another in the eighth minute with a goal by junior, Nicole Lanese (Macedonia/Nordonia). The first half scoring was not over yet as they added three more goals from senior Katie Goedecke (Akron St. Vincent St. Mary/Cuyahoga Falls) in the 20th minute and sophomores Julia Krause (Crestwood/Mantua) and Lauren Beech (United Local/Hanoverton) in the 36th and 37th minute respectively.

Maggie O’Donnell opened the second half scoring with her second goal of the night in the 47th minute to make the lead 6-0. In the 56th minute, sophomore Abbie Andrews (Brecksville-Broadvie Hts/Broadview Heights) added another goal for the Raiders. To cap the night off, freshman, Britney McCauley (Ontario/Ontario) added the eighth and final goal of the night.

The Mount Union women will stay in Hiram and play Franciscan University at 3 p.m. tomorrow afternoon.

UMU Men Edged Out by CWRU

The Mount Union men’s soccer team dropped its season opener at Case Western Reserve in Cleveland Friday night by a score of 1-0.

The Purple Raiders were outshot 14-12, but the Raiders did have chances with six shots on goal and five corner kicks.

The game’s only goal came in the first minute off the foot of CWRU’s Michael Balog.

Mount Union stays on the road playing at Washington and Jefferson (Pa.) Monday, Sept. 4 at 7 p.m. in Washington, Pa.

Another Win for UMU Women

Mount Union, now 2-0 on the year, beat Franciscan at the Hiram Classic with a final score of 4-1.

Junior Nicole Lanese (Macedonia/Nordonia) had the go-ahead goal in the 78th minute to break the 1-1 tie for the Purple Raiders. Senior Katie Goedecke (Cuyahoga Falls/Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary) tacked on two more goals for the Raiders in the 84th minute and 86th minute.

The scoring was started in the first half by Kelsey Scott-Avery of Franciscan in the 11th minute. The Purple Raiders came back with a goal from Maggie O’Donnell (Avon/Avon) in the 13th minute. Julia Krause (Crestwood/Mantua) had assists on the first two goals for the Raiders.

Paige Freel played all 90 minutes in goal for the Raiders allowing one goal on two shots.

Mount Union will play again Wednesday at 7 p.m. in Cincinnati at Mount St. Joseph.
