Photo Credit: ISNSoccer.com Having Hunter Gilstrap as a coach is a player’s dream. Gilstrap is a man who has seen it all as a player, having played in the USL, NASL, and even the South African Premier Soccer League. He’s gotten the job done as a coach with experience at the college, professional, and academy level, helping countless players reach their full potential. He can now add national team coach to his decorated resume after serving on the staff of the
As a journalist you are not supposed to pick favorites when it comes to players or teams, but sometimes you can’t help it. There are just those that rise above the crowd, those that stand out on and off the pitch. Photo Credit: Pam Moody/ISNSoccer.com I first met Hunter Gilstrap when he was a young goalkeeper with the Cleveland City Stars of USL-1. He was already a fan favorite there for a lot of reasons: spectacular athleticism, natural leadership, and complete
Chase Neidig is a Renaissance man in American soccer, having served in every single capacity in the beautiful game. He has spent time at the high school level, the pros, in grassroots movements, internationally, and now in the collegiate game. He has even served on the media and front office side of the sport. Simply put, Neidig has done it all. One thing is always constant: Neidig’s love for soccer and his drive to make it work in America. An eternal optimist, the
Bush is now regarded as one of the top keepers in USSF D-II. The Cleveland City Stars lost a great deal of talent when they folded in the fall of 2009. Most fans remember the skillful play of Teteh Bangura, but many will also remember the great potential of local keeper Evan Bush. Bush served as a talented understudy to Hunter Gilstrap, but was called into action on several occassions. He would appear in 7 matches, posting 2 shutouts and a 1.285 GAA.
Gilstrap finds a home with the Pittsburgh Riverhounds of USL-2. We last saw Hunter Gilstrap in goal for the Cleveland City Stars at Middlefield Cheese Stadium in Bedford, Ohio. Little did we know that this would be the last time we would see the City Stars on the field and in operation. The franchise folded in December of 2009 after failing to find a buyer. It wasn’t due to a lack of effort as Dr. Aaron Tredway did his best to

This comes as quite a shock as positive news was heard yesterday. There are lot of unanswered questions at this point, but it is safe to say that this is disappointing news for players, staff, and obviously supporters. An official announcement from the City Stars organization is expected early next week. We did not want to publish this information early, but thought
Multiple sources suggest that the sale of the City Stars will be official sometime next week. We were told that it is “now in the hands of the lawyers” and should be wrapped up soon. Officials with the United Soccer Leagues declined to make specific comments on the matter, but did say an important update on the City Stars would be made available next week. Past comments from the club suggest the franchise will remain in the USL in some capacity. The City Stars have
We have been able to confirm that the City Stars have not changed ownership. Our sources tell us that there has been little movement recently and that talks have reached a standstill.
It appears that the rumor about the Battery moving to USL-2 is true after all. We heard this news several months back, but thought it was just that, a rumor. The Battery’s website mentions that only five clubs are now in USL-1 and Cleveland was not mentioned as one of those clubs. We have asked for clarification from the league office regarding this matter.
