All of us here at ISN have been feeling a bit nostalgic lately. So we came up with a two-part promotion that should get people talking. It is as follows: 1. Create your own All-Time All-MLS Starting XI In other words, build a dream team of players that left their mark on MLS. It can be players from Season 1 , this season, or anything in between. Google it, dust off your old issues of Soccer America, talk to your fellow fans, whatever it takes. Send your
When talking about the greatest members of the Columbus Crew, undoubtedly Guillermo Barros Schelotto will be in the conversation. Not only was Guillermo an ambassador for the Crew and the city of Columbus, but also won the MLS award as the Most Valuable Player in his first full season with the Crew, after a decade of playing with Argentinean giants Boca Juniors. Schelotto was not only a fan favorite, but also a mentor to younger players like Rogers and Lenhart. Schelotto
The loss of the beloved Guille is the loss of an icon, a legend, and one of the Crew’s greatest players. While I understand that it was a necessary evil, many would have preferred to see GBS finish his playing career in Columbus. He could have played at an elite level for one year before starting the next chapter of his career in coaching. I think he had a solid season again this year and would have likely matched this
The recent slump endured by the Columbus Crew has critics talking about the need for a pure goal scorer to play alongside the ever youthful Guillermo Barros Schelotto. Eyes have turned back to one of the most prolific scorers in Crew history: Stern John. John, 33, is currently recovering from knee surgery, but is eyeing a comeback with Columbus. He has been going through rehabilitation and training with the Crew with the idea of officially joining the MLS side this winter.
Williams is living his childhood dream to play with the Crew. While Josh Williams remains a longshot to be a permanent member of the Columbus Crew, he still relishes the opportunity he has been given. Word of his signing came on Thursday and was a surprise to everyone, including the former Cleveland State midfielder. “Out of nowhere they called me,” Williams stated. “It was a dream come true.” William’s only time with the Crew came in the 2010 preseason, having played in a
Former Crew midfielder Cory Elenio has now found his way to the Carolina Railhawks. It didn’t take long for Cory Elenio to find a new club after his unfortunate release from the Columbus Crew before the start of the 2010 MLS season. Elenio landed with the Carolina Railhawks of the USSF D-II Pro League, an opportunity that would give him more time on the pitch and a chance to get fully fit. Elenio, a talented young midfielder, was originally selected by the Crew
All of us here at ISN love the idea of the CONCACAF Champions League. It is no way comparable to the UEFA Champions League, but you have to start somewhere. The idea of 24 teams from 9 countries fighting for a single piece of hardware is just an awesome concept. Getting to see teams that wouldn’t normally travel to the states is an added bonus. It provides us as American fans with some of the best soccer of the season.
Columbus will host Toluca on Tuesday, March 9, kicking off the tournament’s knockout stages. The Crew will then travel to Mexico for another match against Toluca on Thursday, March 17. The Columbus Crew are the lone squad from MLS and the United States remaining in the competition.
