Akron Men’s Soccer Draws to a 1-1 Tie at Florida Gulf Coast

After a crisp first half goal by sophomore Adam Najem, the University of Akron men’s soccer team couldn’t hold on and eventually drew to a 1-1 tie with Florida Gulf Coast on Saturday night. The Zips and Eagles, two programs receiving the most votes outside of the top 25 as of the first NSCAA poll released last week, played in front of a school-record 1,574 fans at the FGCU Soccer Complex. The first half saw a lot of play in the middle third

Akron Men’s Soccer Falls In Double Overtime At St. John’s

The No. 5 University of Akron men’s soccer team suffered its first setback of the season in a 2-1 double-overtime defeat at No. 23 St. John’s Friday night at Belson Stadium. Late in the second half, with the score tied at one, the Zips (2-1-0) appeared to catch a break when junior Saad Abdul-Salaam went down in the box while attempting a shot. But no penalty was awarded and the teams went into overtime. Ironically, it was a penalty kick that did UA in

Photo Credit: Gary L. Moody Jr./ISNSoccer.com The No. 8 University of Akron men’s soccer team took to the pitch Wednesday for their first official training session of the fall collegiate season.  The program is now in the capable hands of former assistant Jared Embick, who was promoted to head coach when Caleb Porter left for the Portland Timbers. Fans shouldn’t expect a lot of changes under Embick’s watch. “With Caleb I had a great mentor so I don’t have to change much,”

Akron Men’s Soccer Dominates Xavier

Akron quickly dispatched Xavier with a 2-0 scoreline Saturday afternoon. It only took three minutes for Zac Portillos to score a  goal after breaking away from the Musketeer defense. This was followed by another Akron goal in the second half from Aodhan Quinn. This goal was all about playing together as a team as Saad-Abdul Salaam and Matt Foldesy combined to set up Quinn from 12 yards out.  Salaam launched a cross into the box, where it was controlled by Foldesy,

Akron Men’s Soccer Dominates Kentucky in Spring Exhibition

A dominating performance by The University of Akron men’s soccer team resulted in a 3-0 exhibition win over Kentucky at FirstEnergy Stadium – Cub Cadet Field Saturday afternoon. Second-half goals from Saad Abdul-Salaam, Matt Foldesy and Eric Stevenson were more than enough as the Zips were rarely threatened in their second spring game of the season. In all, UA out-shot Kentucky, 21-3, and generated 12 corner kicks to UK’s one. “I am happy with the result and progress we have made from out last game,” said Akron

Akron vs. Creighton Men’s Soccer Preview

The University of Akron (18-1-2) is quite possibly facing their most challenging match of 2012.  Fresh off an electric 2-1 win over Michigan last week, the Zips now head to their next opponent, the Bluejays of Creighton University (16-3-2). Creighton had four players drafted in January 2012, including Crew winger Ethan Finlay, a speedster that has a bright future in MLS. But like every other top program, Creighton reloaded nicely for the fall season.  Bolstered by incoming freshmen and elite transfers
