The Dragon Roars Again (Review)

Home/Product News and Reviews/The Dragon Roars Again (Review)

The journey of Welsh football is a fascinating story, one that deserves to be told.  The Dragon Roars Again tells the story from the perspective of a supporter, someone that has lived through the highs and lows of the Welsh game. Luckily for author Jamie Thomas, he happens to be writing during one of the high points.  Wales is, after all, returning to a major international tournament after a 58-year absence.

The Dragon Roars Again - Jamie ThomasThomas is a brilliant young author, one that tackled the story behind on the nation’s qualification for Euro 2016.  He proves it was something that was truly years in the making.  The result is a great read, one that details the Wales national team from every angle and perspective.  He speaks to loads of experts to get the full story, sharing the thoughts of players, journalists, and coaches.  Thomas offers a variety of formats, including Q&A, in an effort to create an easy read and engaging content.

Simply put, this book is a comprehensive look into the program over the past 50+ years.

The most touching part of the book is the discussion surrounding Gary Speed, a Welsh legend as a player, captain, and manager.  When the Welsh takes the pitch at Euro 2016, Speed’s legacy will be on full display.  His death left a massive hole in the Welsh football program, but more importantly, in the hearts of Welsh fans and supporters.  This was the most devastating loss the nation would ever experience in sport.

Euro 2016 will be a great showcase of world football.  Everyone will get to see perhaps the strongest Welsh side ever, a team that is a legitimate contender.

But how did they get there? How does a nation of just three million have this kind of success? It’s likely a result of a combination of things: some unlikely names (the likes of John Toshack come to mind), Speed’s tremendous legacy, and Chris Coleman’s dedication.  Toshack gave the current generation of Welsh footballers opportunities on the pitch while Speed provided the program with a plan, a tradition of excellence, and a massive example to follow.  Coleman executed Speed’s vision to perfection in a time of uncertainty and tragedy.

Thomas is obviously an expert on the subject; his passion for country and sport are easy to see.  The end result is yet another brilliant text from Y Lolfa, one’s of the world leaders when it comes to rugby and football titles.
