You can’t argue with Alex Welsh’s credentials and you certainly can’t argue with the effectiveness of the third edition of The Soccer Goalkeeping Handbook.
Welsh has been involved with player development at both Arsenal and Tottenham in addition to his work at the FA. Simply put, he is one of the world’s best goalkeeping coaches and any book he is involved with is guaranteed to be pure gold.
This title would be valuable for coaches and keepers alike. Coaches can learn the latest methodology and tactics, while players can learn more about the mental approach to the game. The graphics and photos are world-class, just like the content.
It is easy to navigate and is broken into three sensible parts. The first focuses on the foundations of goalkeeping. The second breaks down the five goalkeeping roles, while the final section gives you guidance on staying on top of your game. This looks to be one of the most comprehensive coaching resources we have ever seen and aside from attending sessions at the NSCAA Convention each year, I can’t imagine a more effective or affordable way to learn more about the goalkeeping position. It is an absolute bargain at $22 or less.
Everyone agrees that being between the posts can be the loneliest spot on the pitch. The goalkeeper is either the hero (think Tim Howard in 2014) or the villain (think England’s Robert Green against the U.S. in 2010) based on their individual performance in what is otherwise a team sport. This resource helps prepare players and coaches for this dubious situation by providing them with solid, proven strategies to be the very best. I wouldn’t purchase any other title; The Soccer Goalkeeping Handbook is that good.
