On the surface, Jason Garey’s Geauxing Galt is a great “rags to riches” story about a likeable, hard-working everyman that makes it big. You dig a little deeper and you have a story about good vs. evil. Wyatt Bourgeouis, a character in the vein of Horatio Alger, spends his life preparing to take on corrupt politicians like Harry Maddow. Wyatt becomes a self-made billionaire thanks to hard work and determination. But he risks losing it all to Harry, a man who has been
The last time I saw Jason Garey in Columbus, he was wearing the Black & Gold of the Crew. He was finishing up his 5th MLS season and unbeknownst to me, he soon would be plying his trade with the Houston Dynamo. The Dynamo would make it to the 2011 MLS Cup Final, but Garey wouldn’t get another championship win as the Dynamo fell to the star-studded LA Galaxy. Major hip surgery would sideline Garey for nearly 5 months. He would miss out on the start of the
“I always tell them to live in the moment. It will be gone before you know it. Enjoy every minute that you can play. It could be gone tomorrow, in a week, or in four years if you are a freshman in college.” These are the words of Ohio Galaxies WPSL head coach Chris Black, one of the top young coaches in all of the Midwest. Where did this valuable lesson come from? In part it was something he learned from his high school
Seattle Sounders FC has signed German midfielder Christian Tiffert, the club announced today. Per Major League Soccer and club policy, terms were not disclosed. Tiffert will be added to the roster pending receipt of his P-1 Visa. He will occupy one of three Designated Players slots on the Sounders FC roster following the trade of Alvaro Fernandez. “We were extremely impressed with Christian during his visit to Seattle,” said Owner and General Manager Adrian Hanauer. “His character and mentality fit well
Some people stand by the faulty claim that the New York Cosmos caused the original NASL to fold. On the other hand, the Cosmos arguably were the best thing to ever happen to American soccer. Pundits are arguing whether the move to the new NASL is a temporary one, but who cares? It instantly gives the NASL global credibility and gives the league hope moving forward. I have to say I never heard ESPN, Sports Illustrated, the New York Times, or Fox Sports
The Columbus Crew got goals from Homegrown Players Aaron Horton and Ben Speas to lift the home team past EPL side Stoke City 2-1 in an international friendly. Stoke, in the U.S. for a preseason training tour, brought some of the world’s best footballers to Crew Stadium and at the same time allowed some of their younger players to get some experience. Peter Crouch and Kenwyne Jones were the biggest names for the Potters and both saw time
Today’s championship match should have been a classic. It was a matchup between the top two teams in the conference, both of whom had demolished their semifinal opponent. The D.C. United Women though had other ideas. In another showing of their dominant play this season, United won the Eastern Conference Championship by a tally of 3-0. After an incredibly sluggish first 25 minutes D.C. found another gear and left the Charlotte Lady Eagles in the dust. In the 28th minute Lianne Sanderson
AFC Cleveland’s season ended with a 2-1 loss to the visiting Madison 56ers in the NPSL Midwest Championship. Madison’s Carlos McCrary, who spent time with the University of North Carolina and Creighton University, scored both of Madison’s goals. He was aggressive moving forward and caused problems for the unlucky AFC Cleveland Royals. Cleveland had a slew of opportunities throughout the physical match, but only Strongsville native and Ohio State midfielder Michael Matlock scored a goal for AFC Cleveland. The Royals had
The New York Fury and Chicago Red Stars battled to a 1-1 draw at Hofstra University Sunday night, closing out the Women’s Premier Soccer League (WPSL) Elite League standings after the final day of play. The draw puts New York in third place, and Chicago in fourth. The Fury will face second-place Western New York Flash in a playoff semifinal at Sahlen’s Stadium in Rochester, N.Y., at 5:00 p.m. ET on Wednesday, July 25. The Red Stars will play first-place finisher
