Madison 56ers forward Drew Whalen has been named the ninth Mitre National Player of the Week for the 2015 NPSL season.
The Peoria, IL native scored a hat trick in Madison’s 3-1 win over the Minnesota United Reserves. It was the twenty-year-old’s NPSL debut.
Whalen, who is a standout at Western Illinois University, scored one goal during four appearances as a sophomore in 2014 after scoring three goals and starting 17 matches as a freshman in 2013.
Success in college was a result of Whalen’s highly decorated youth career. At Peoria Notre Dame HS, he was a part of state championship teams in 2010 and 2012, as well as finishing state runners-up in 2009 and finishing third in 2011. He would go on to earn Honorable Mention All-American honors in 2012 after registering an incredible 35 goals and 25 assists in his senior season.
