What I Hate about Football: The Definitive Guide to Everything that is Rotten in the Beautiful Game (Review)

Editor February 14, 2016

The football world is rife with scandals at every level, from FIFA on down. Whether it’s match-fixing, corruption, or just plain greed, it’s pretty clear that the beautiful game has become tainted as of late.

Richard Foster, author of What I Hate about Football: The Definitive Guide to Everything that is Rotten in the Beautiful Game, breaks down the game’s problems in an interesting way, letter by letter through the alphabet.

Some might think that this book is a bit controversial or edgy, but it’s important to acknowledge problems so you can actually fix them. Football has always had some issues; this certainly is not the first time trouble has come to the surface.

The topics are wide-ranging, going from agents and diving to loyalty and owners. Foster shares his frustrations with the game, but at the same time, shares a deep passion for the sport he obviously loves. It’s clear that he doesn’t like the direction of the game at the present, but he seems to have a plan for moving forward.

This book is certainly an interesting concept, but it is one that adds to the discussion of the beautiful game. The author doesn’t pull any punches or sugarcoat anything. Instead he chooses to identify and problems, no matter how big or small.

This is a must-read for any fan of football or sports as it is beautifully written and comes from Amberley, one of the world’s best football publishers. You can’t miss with this one.
